At the beginning of 2015, I decided to take the plunge and discard my gym membership at New York Sports Club in favor of joining the massively popular Classpass. If you’re unfamiliar with Classpass, it is a membership that allows you to attend fitness classes in hundreds of boutique fitness studios in a variety of locations. For me, this is usually the NYC Metro Area (NYC, Brooklyn, Long Island etc). The options are endless and aside from SoulCycle which is not included, many of the other premier fitness studios are. For $130 per month, you have unlimited access to all classes but you can only go to each studio 3 times per month. With so many options to choose from, you hardly ever have to worry about that 3 visit limit. Additionally, if you are traveling for work or pleasure you can attend classes in any of the classpass participating cities which is pretty awesome.
I knew joining Classpass would be a good experience but what I didn’t realize was how much it would change both my mind & body. This membership has become one of the most gratifying gifts I have given to myself. I never expected the drastic improvement I would see in my quality of life.
First off, Classpass has encouraged me to try new things. I, like many others am guilty of getting in a fitness rut. I end up doing the same workouts and exercises all the time, get bored and end up at a plateau. With so many options to choose from, I felt guilty going to the same places all of the time. Yes, I do have my favorites (Pure Barre I’m looking at you!) but I make an effort to try something new at least once a week. Two years ago I would have never set foot in a pilates or antigravity yoga class. I had never boxed before. Boxing is now one of my favorite exercise classes. It forced me to stop being so narrow minded about fitness and to explore new opportunities in hopes of finding a new love or hobby. I would have laughed if anyone told me I would have been taking Justin Bieber dance classes as part of my fitness routine a year ago. Now I see how that can be part of a complete workout routine and add a little bit of spice to your week. It has opened my eyes up to different things than before and for that I am thankful.
Classpass has allowed me to become even more social than before. I’m the farthest thing from shy but I was always a loner at the gym. Now, I schedule classes with friends and make a fitness date out of it. Having a workout partner gives me an extra reason to look forward to my workout AND makes me less likely to bail on it. It also adds a fun social aspect to your routine. It doesn’t need to be all work and no play! Spending time with friends at a class is great especially after a stressful day at work.
Classpass has changed my mentality about fitness. Before, I was scared to use weights. I didn’t know how to properly use them either. Fitness classes taught me proper form and allowed me to push myself out of my comfort zone. I challenged myself with boot camps and Crossfit type classes as well as sculpting classes. As a result, I got stronger. I am no longer scared to use weights. I now have the strong mind/body connection I desired. I have gained invaluable knowledge regarding exercise variation and form. While the progress might be slower than a tortoise, we all know the hare didn’t win that race. It’s easy to get discouraged but the strength I have gained has made me a more confident person. Confidence is key to a happy life and I am glad that Classpass helped me achieve that kind of strength and happiness.
Classpass offers more benefits than just those muscles you gain. The ability to adapt outside of your comfort zone is something that is so important to have. You never know what life will throw your way. It’s the best $130 dollars I spend every month. It’s an investment to my health and wellness that goes a long way.
