With the start of summer looming around the corner, I decided that this month I will start a weekly or bi-weekly wellness series to showcase some of the most popular wellness trends and share my opinions on them. My focus lately has been so focused on my passion for style that I’ve been neglecting my other interests like health & wellness. So, now I’m putting the “fresh” and “fit” back into “Fresh Fit Fab.”
I’ll be kicking this series off by talking about a new favorite product of mine; Kombucha. I’m not even going to try to tout this as a new trend. It’s been around for some time and has become wildly popular in the health industry. Many of you have undoubtedly heard about it already. However, it’s only been recently that I’ve decided to dive in and give it a real go.
What is Kombucha? It’s a sweetened tea that’s fermented with a colony of bacteria and yeast. It contains vinegar, b vitamins, enzymes & probiotics. The tea is slightly tangy in taste from the vinegar but depending on the flavoring can be sweet as well. If you are worried about your sugar consumption– never fear! The fermentation process consumes most of the sugar, leaving a low sugar product as the end result. If you can get past the idea of drinking it after the description above (I know it took me a while), the benefits are proven to be vast. It increases your energy levels and aids digestion, the detoxification of your liver and your immune system. It’s been known to prevent ulcers. The mix of probiotics present in the drink keep the gut balanced and regular. The presence of certain acids helps it to be beneficial to cleanse the liver after drinking. So there you have it, it’s essentially the holy grail of drinks.
I’ve suffered from digestive issues since high school. It’s not easy when you constantly feeling sick or zapped of energy. I’ve finally been weened off of my medications but I am no stranger to these problems and every now and again they decide to make a guest appearance. I knew about the benefits of the tea and how it can help improve gut regularity so I decided to give it a try. I avoided it for a long time because drinking brands like Synergy where you could visibly see the SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria & yeast that is shaped like a mushroom) sitting at the bottom made my stomach turn just looking at it. However, I finally found a brand that quickly has become a favorite and a regular in my drink rotation. Healthade Kombucha Tea in the Sweet thorn flavor tastes like a berry iced tea. It’s delicious! I have yet to see what I call the “bacteria blob” sitting at the bottom of the bottle. Not only did it taste great but in the time that I have been drinking it, I have been feeling more normal than I have in a long time. I definitely recommend giving this a try for anyone suffering from gut irregularity or depleted energy levels. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it’s detoxing my body after a long weekend either ;).
