PatriciaFIT is one of NYC’s best kept secrets in the boutique fitness scene. TTL (Tightened. Toned. Lifted) taught by celebrity trainer Patricia Whitcas herself was by far one of my best finds on Classpass. I wasn’t sure what to expect since I had never heard of it. A quick check on Yelp! had me convinced to give it a go after reading such positive reviews.
The studio is located in the Balanced Arts Center on 28th and Broadway. As soon as I got to the studio, a positive and cheery Patricia greeted me at the door. My first thought was “Damn, this woman looks GOOD. I came to the right place.” The room is lined with mats, towels, a 2 lb hand weight and a resistance band for about 10-15 people in total. As everyone sat down, Patricia came around to personally introduce herself to any new girls and to make sure everyone was comfortable.
The class focuses on toning and alignment using elements from both barre and pilates. We began with core work on the mat. From there we transitioned into sculpting and toning moves for the legs and upper body. Think a lot of leg lifts, shoulder raises, and bridges involving light weights and resistance bands. You might think that the light weights sound easy but anything is hard when you do an ungodly amount of reps. It hurt. Badly. But as they say, pain leads to change so we continue to enjoy torturing ourselves anyway. This class is truly a full body workout but the part that felt most worked was my butt. My ass will be thanking me for sure. Probably not tomorrow though when I am not able to walk…
The small nature of the class allows Patricia to really see what everyone is doing. Most of the time you’re thinking, “Screw this, why can she see my every move?” As much as you hate it, it really is so beneficial. As soon as you’re about to stop, she pushes you further. “Your ass should feel like it’s about to fall off,” is a phrase you will commonly hear in her class. She is able to give personalized attention to everyone, push you to your limit and correct your form. These factors elevate your workout to the next level and are sometimes missing from larger or more “mainstream” workout classes. You feel like you are getting a personal training experience.
Although the small space of the studio was frightening at a first glance, I was pleasantly surprised at how little space was actually required for each move. I never felt claustrophobic during my workout, which is a fear of mine in some small studios. NYC rent is high and it’s hard to find studios that can safely and comfortably fit large amounts of people.
The thing I like most about this class is the amount of hard work and effort you put in for a short amount of time. You make the most out of the 45 minutes. In, out, and done. No one wants to work out for hours and hours after a long day of work. This class allows you to get the most of your time. Even though 45 minutes flies, it is still super effective.
I can definitely see why she has so many regular students. Between the great class and her bubbly personality, it would be hard to not come back. And hey, if i look even half as good as she does at her age I will be one happy camper.
