The Kardashians/Jenners- you either love them or you hate them. There’s no in between. But regardless of your personal feelings towards the clan, there’s one thing that you can’t deny: they are business savvy women. From beauty tools to hair extensions and now Kylie’s lipstick, they have established themselves as moguls of the beauty industry. More specifically, Kylie Jenner is the one who is truly leading the pack.
Everyone can say what they want about Kylie. “Too much makeup”, “Lips are too big”, “Wanna be Kim Kardashian” are just a few of the comments I commonly overhear. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But, she is rapidly becoming a huge player in the beauty industry in her own right, separate from the success of the rest of her family.
If Kylie says jump, people say “how high?” Her social clout is where the idea for her LipKit was derived from. Kylie’s lips have been the talk of the media for a while. From talks of lip injections to lip liners and lipsticks and even the (unsafe) Kylie Jenner lip challenge; her lips have been discussed non stop over the past year. She finally released her favorite Mac products that she used everyday to the press. What happened next was pretty crazy. Every time she went back to Mac her colors were always sold out! People were clearing out the stores in search for her favorite nudes that she wore on her lips every day.
Kylie then took it upon herself to create her own nude matte lipstick. If she couldn’t get her favorites in the store she would have to take matters into her own hands. This was when LipKit by Kylie was born; featuring a lip liner and matte liquid lipstick in three different shades- Candy K, Dolce K and True Brown. She finally released them to the public in early December and the response from consumers was overwhelming. The kits sold out in less than 1 minute. I’m pretty sure she wasn’t even prepared for that kind of success. It just goes to show that if Kylie’s name is on it, people will buy it and her signature makeup look is now coveted more than ever. She released a second round of products Monday of last week for those who missed out the first time. Even those sold out in minutes. Now, you can find them on Ebay for the totally reasonable price of $500 (what a bargain!).
At only age 18, she has created a lipstick that has had massive sell out levels and created a brand with a ton of success. It’s pretty impressive. Finding one of her lip kits at a normal price right now is like finding a rare canary diamond. But while it’s wildly popular, is it actually a good product?
That’s what I was hoping to find out for myself. While I’ve never really been on the Kardashian bandwagon, I do think that Kylie has some serious makeup skills so I trust her in that department. Seeing all of the photos on instagram of smooth nude toned lips definitely helped do the trick convincing me to take the plunge. After being shut out of the first sale, I jumped on the LipKit’s website at noon on the dot on Monday and got myself a Candy K (the lightest shade). 3 days later it had arrived and was ready for it’s trial.
The first thing to impress me was that the ship time was unbelievably fast. Second, was probably the fact that you get a lip liner AND a lipstick for $29. You normally pay $20 or above just for a lipstick itself, no liner included. The third was the product itself. I was definitely pleasantly surprised! I was expecting pretty good but nothing great. However, I was proven wrong. The vanilla scented liquid lipstick goes on smoothly and evenly, covering any imperfections and dries in 15 seconds into a matte finish. I have tried other matte liquid lipsticks and have been disappointed every time. The products often show every crack in your chapped lips and leave you looking pretty unattractive. Who wants to kiss frosty looking cracked lips? Not me.
The biggest incentive of this product is by far the length of wear. This is the longest lasting lip color I have ever used. I wore it for 14 hours and only had to reapply once. Once?! Yes, you read that correctly. The color lasted through countless meals, coffees, and maybe even a beer or two. Don’t judge; it was a Friday! I normally find that after any meal I have to reapply my lip product which just ends up wasting more product. With this kit you are certainly getting what you pay for because less reapplication= a longer lasting product that is worth your money. So if you still trying to convince yourself at this point let economics be your reasoning for purchase ;).
So whether you are a fan or not of Kylie Jenner’s is irrelevant. She hit the nail on the head with this product and if you are looking for a long lasting lip color this is the way to go. I can’t help but hope she releases a more extensive line of colors in the near future!
