Coconut oil is a nutritional powerhouse; a bondafide superfood. Once shunned for its level of saturated fat, coconut oil has now become mainstream in the health industry. This is in part due to the fact that we have learned that saturated fat is harmless while trans fat should be avoided at all costs. Healthy fats should be incorporated into a balanced diet and this oil is now one of the top choices to get the benefits of healthy fat into your diet. Part of the reason why coconut oil is a “healthy” fat is due to its unique combination of fatty acids. The combination allows coconut oil to be easily digested and to be used for energy production rather than fat storage. But it doesn’t end there; it also has antibacterial and antioxidant effects on the body.
Look closely and you will see everyone in the food and beauty industries using this essential product. Food and beauty? What do they have in common? Well, it turns out that this superfood has more uses than just cooking! Here are my favorite uses for coconut oil:
1. Sauteèing fresh vegetables
Switch it up from your usual olive oil to coconut oil a few days a week. This will add different nutrients to your dinner routine.
2. Replace for butter or canola in baked goods
Put a few drops on damp skin and rub the oil in like you would any body lotion. Coconut oil is known to hydrate the skin and keep it moist throughout the day. Not to mention, the tropical scent of the oil will smell even better than your usual post-shower cream.
4. Split End treatment
Place a few drops of oil throughout the ends of your hair and let sit for 20 minutes before showering, shampooing & rinsing it out. This will help to keep your ends moisturized and protect them from future breakage.
5. Lip Balm
If you haven’t gotten the hint already, coconut oil is very hydrating. You can use it anywhere on your body that gets dry. Unfortunately, once the cold weather hits it is pretty tough to keep your lips moisturized and prevent them from getting chapped. Using coconut oil as your “chapstick” throughout the day can help you prevent this.
6. Oil Pulling
Oil pulling for 20 minutes can improve oral health. It helps to kill the germs in your mouth due to the antibacterial properties of the oil. Healthier gums, whiter teeth, and better breath are just a few of the benefits. To do this, swish coconut oil in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes before spitting it out.
7. Frizz Fighter
Rub a dab in your hands to warm it up. It is solid at room temperature but melts with heat so be sure to use the heat from your hands to liquefy the oil. Use it to smooth down the frizz on dry hair. Be careful not to use too much or your hair will look oily.
8. Makeup Remover
Coconut oil on a cotton pad can remove even the most stubborn makeup. Makeup remover wipes can get pricey so this is a great cost effective alternative.
You will definitely get your money’s worth with a jar of coconut oil. It can even save you money on some of your beauty products! It is one of the most versatile health products on the market.
